Selim Raihan (r4d team Bangladesh) talked about “Managing growth for Social inclusion in Bangladesh” at the IHD and World Bank Conference on “Prosperity, Equality and Sustainability: Perspectives and Policies for a Better World” held on June 1-3 in New Delhi, India. The conference was a joint cooperation of the Indian Institute for Human Development and the World Bank. The aim of the conference was to expand the knowledge base about frameworks and methods available to inform policy design towards promoting prosperity, social inclusion and sustainability and to learn about different ways of overcoming practical challenges while conducting policy analysis and incorporating its findings into policy .

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

ARTNeT, in collaboration with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale (GIZ, Germany) and our partner in Bangladesh, the South Asian Network on Economic Modeling (SANEM), organized a capacity building workshop on “Introduction to Gravity Modelling ” on 18-22 April in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The workshop aimed to build the capacity of policy researchers and analysts in Mongolia on evidence-based policy formulation and analysis, with a particular reference to gravity models for trade-policy analysis.

R4D-Consultation Meeting with stakeholders Employment Effects of Development Policy Instruments

The objective of the R4D consultation meeting was to inform stakeholders about the objectives of two research activities under the R4D project and to obtain their perspectives on the research questions. The meeting was therefore designed to be interactive. Representatives of the Private Enterprise Foundation, Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations, Ghana Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Association of Small-Scale Industry, Trades Union Congress, Ghana Investment Promotion Authority and the Export Development and Agricultural Investment Fund attended the meeting. A representative of the Head of the Department of Economics, Dr William Baah-Boateng, chaired the meeting.

The r4d project on Employment Effects of Different Policy Instruments organized a workshop on Connecting Local Enterprises to Global markets at the International Trade Centre (ITC) on 8 October 2014. Employment Effects of Different Policy Instruments is a research project funded by the Swiss Programme for Research on Global Issues for Development, involving a network of eight universities, in Switzerland (World Trade Institute (WTI), University of Geneva), Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Ghana, Madagascar, South Africa and Viet Nam.

R4D-Project Presentation at the International Labour Conference 2014 Employment in the Context of Sustainable Development

The focus of the 103rd Session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) was on building a future with decent work. Worker, employer and government delegates from the ILO’s 185 member states participated at the ILC in order to tackle a wide range of issues, including labour migration and employment strategies, ways out of informality and strengthening ILC Convention 29 on forced labor. The ILC provided an ideal platform for an initial stakeholder consultation and presentation of two employment projects to an international audience, both of which are funded by the Swiss Programme for Research on Global Issues for Development (R4D) initiative: Employment Effects of Different Development Policy Instruments and Trade and Labour Market Outcomes. Dr Marion Jansen, Dr Doris Oberdabernig, Professor Marcelo Olarreaga, SDC Delegate Ms Dominique Simone Rychen and the Swiss ILO Delegation briefed tripartite ILO delegations from 9 countries. Participants included members of the ILO delegations of Ghana and Ethiopia, UNCTAD and ILO representatives, academics and representatives of the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
